Travelling to the Island of Bute

Bute Ferry arriving at Rothesay, Isle of Bute

The Isle of Bute is Scotland's most accessible island, only 90 minutes from Glasgow. Situated in the Firth of Clyde, it is easily reachable by two regular ferry services from the mainland.
The principal route to the island is by car and passenger ferry from Wemyss Bay, Inverclyde.
The ferry crossing from Wemyss Bay over to Rothesay takes 35 minutes and with sailings approximately every hour at peak times. No booking is required. For a detailed timetable and further information, please visit the Caledonian MacBrayne website. www.calmac.co.uk
There is also a smaller car ferry at Rhuboddoch on the North side of the Island leaving from Collintraive in Argyll. This ferry crossing is only 5 minutes!
Train Services
There are regular train services to the ferry terminus at Weymss Bay from both Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street (10 minutes from Glasgow International Airport).
Airport.
There is a regular shuttle bus to Paisley train station from the airport. Catch the train from Paisley Gilmour Street Station to Wemyss Bay. The ferry leaves from Weymss Bay train station. The times are normally linked to coincide.
Wemyss Bay has a beautiful iconic train station that is much admired by travellers. Even Michael Portillo visited it in his TV programme!
Alternatively a taxi from the airport to the ferry is approx £50. There are all the usual car hire companies at the airport.
Travel from the Ferry to Kilchattan Bay
By Bus Service
A bus service links with the ferry. Buses run regularly to Kilchattan Bay. They are timed to meet the ferries and the bus stop is on the main road just outside the ferry terminal.
By Taxi
Isle of Bute Taxi. 01700 504499. There is always a Taxi in the rank, on the main road just outside the ferry terminal. Approx £20 to St Blane's House.
By Car
Leave the ferry and turn left at the traffic lights. Follow the coast road for approx six miles,turn left at the Kingarth Hotel and head to the village.
